Funding News

In June 2012 the Australian Government awarded BioPower Systems A$5.6 million in grant funding towards the Port Fairy Pilot Wave Energy Project. This funding added to a A$5 million grant provided to the company by the Victorian Government, completing the funding for the project.

With the funding in place, BioPower Systems is now focussing all efforts on delivering the Port Fairy Pilot Wave Energy Project, which aims to install and demonstrate a 250kW bioWAVE ocean wave energy system at a grid-connected site on the southern coast of Australia.

Project Activities

The power conversion module for the project, called O-Drive, has completed factory testing and is now logging hours during extended "endurance" dry-runs.

All design, including the bioWAVE structure, foundation, and mechanical/electrical systems, is due to be completed in November 2012. We anticipate commencing fabrication of the structure before the end of 2012. The construction, fit-out, testing of all project items (including cabling and onshore works) will occupy most of the next 12 months. The ocean deployment of the bioWAVE is currently scheduled to occur late in 2013.

Permitting for the project, including all environmental and planning permits, is now nearing completion. We anticipate that all permits will be in place by the end of 2012.

The company is committed to keeping the public and local stakeholders well-informed about project activities.  We aim to be accessible and responsive.  All enquiries about the project are welcome.  For contact details, please visit: www.biopowersystems.com.

After the 250kW bioWAVE pilot is installed, it will undergo testing and demonstration for a period of 21 months. The operation and performance of the system will be independently validated.

Business Development News

BioPower Systems is aiming to advance past the pilot stage rapidly, and to develop and trial a commercial-scale 1MW bioWAVE as soon as possible after the pilot validation. Beyond this, the company aims to support development of commercial-scale wave farms, with increasing scale.

In order to reach the scale necessary to achieve sufficient economies of scale to allow for competitive electricity production, BioPower Systems is actively building capacity through establishing strategic alliances. Recently, BioPower Systems formed an alliance with the Shanghai Electric Co. - one of the largest diversified industrial manufacturing companies in China. BIOPOWER SYSTEMS AWARDED $5 MILLION FROM VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT

Sydney, Australia; 1 December 2011:  Ocean energy company, BioPower Systems (BPS), today announced that the Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, the Hon. Michael O'Brien MP, has awarded the company conditional funding support of $5 million under the Sustainable Energy Pilot Demonstration Program.

The funding will be applied towards the $14 million pilot demonstration of the company's 250kW bioWAVE ocean wave energy system at a grid-connected site near Port Fairy, Victoria.

"In developing the bioWAVE technology we set out to address the many issues that have bedeviled most wave energy technologies," said CEO, Dr Timothy Finnigan.  Inspired by the motion of large sea plants under wave action, and conscious of the costs and difficulties of doing development work in the ocean, BPS took the unusual step of spending five years performing multiple on land tests at increasing scale prior to ocean deployment. The most critical component has been tested at full scale at its factory in Mascot NSW (Sydney).

"We are now ready for the ultimate test – installing the bioWAVE in high energy 30-metre deep ocean waters.  We have to raise another $3.6 million to complete the project funding, and given our results to date we are confident of achieving this in the coming months.  The technology has been positively assessed by more than a dozen independent reviewers," said Dr Finnigan.

The unique bioWAVE differs from other wave technologies in three critical ways.

Firstly, it is designed to generate grid compatible electricity 'in situ' and hence is connected to the shore via a sub sea electrical cable only. This gives good flexibility on locating the plant, opening up access to greater energy resources, while always transmitting the energy to shore efficiently as high voltage electricity.

Secondly, during extreme wave conditions it will automatically assume a "safe" position lying flat against the seabed.  This reduces the structural design requirements (and hence cost) while maintaining reliability.

Thirdly, the design, utilising a patented wide "multi-blade" structure, is expected to capture a much higher proportion of the available energy than other designs.

"We believe bioWAVE will, when fully commercially developed, produce electricity at a price highly competitive with wind and be closer to baseload characteristics than either wind or solar", said Dr Finnigan. "It is gratifying that the potential of the technology has been recognised by the Victorian Government," he added.

Twelve other organisations have signed on to contribute cash and in-kind support for the planned four-year pilot demonstration project, including key suppliers, manufacturers, consultants and three Australian universities.

Further Background

The bioWAVE consists of a structure that sways back and forth beneath the waves, integrated with a self-contained module (O-Drive) that converts the resulting oscillating forces to electricity by pressurising hydraulic fluid, which is used to spin a generator to produce electricity for delivery to the grid via a subsea cable. The technology is designed to operate in depths of 30 to 50 metres.  The critical O-Drive module has been fully tested at its commercial scale of 250kW (Note, a 1MW commercial-scale bioWAVE would utilise a set of four 250kW O-Drive modules, arranged in parallel).  The O-Drive is designed to be detached and easily retrieved for onshore servicing.  The energetic wave climate of the Southern Ocean is ideal for performance testing of the 250kW pilot-scale bioWAVE, which will be independently assessed and validated for potential commercial development.

Up to 23 new jobs will be created in Victoria during the project.  Following the pilot, there is significant opportunity for expansion in Victoria using commercial-scale 1MW bioWAVE systems, with the potential for 200 new jobs in the first five years.

BIOPOWER SYSTEMS POWER MODULE GRID-TESTED AND READY FOR SEA TRIALS

Sydney, Australia; 08 August 2011: Ocean energy company, BioPower Systems, today
announced that it has completed extensive tests of its full-scale O-DriveTM power conversion
module, successfully delivering stable power to the grid over extended periods with a high level
of efficiency.

The O-DriveTM 250kW module is designed to plug into wave and tidal energy systems, such as
the company's bioWAVETM and bioSTREAMTM. It is driven in an oscillating fashion to convert
the ocean energy harnessed by such systems into grid-ready AC power.

Work commenced on the O-DriveTM in 2008 under a project partly funded by an Australian
Commonwealth Government REDI grant. The O-DriveTM combines a hydraulic circuit, an
electric generator, and complex control algorithms to convert the characteristically large forces,
and slow motions, inherent to ocean waves into a steady flow of electricity. A test rig was built
to reproduce ocean forces and apply these to the O-DriveTM in order to perform tests.
"Ocean energy devices typically oscillate slowly in response to huge forces, and this presents a
significant challenge in terms of harnessing the energy to produce electricity. The O-DriveTM
solves this problem outright, as it not only gears up the motion, but also rectifies it and smooths
it, so that we can produce grid-ready electricity using a standard electric generator" the CEO of
BioPower Systems, Dr Timothy Finnigan, said. "We are very pleased with the efficiency of this
system, and with the quality of power that is produced."

The O-DriveTM is designed to be detached from a moored ocean energy system, which enables
easy and cost-effective maintenance. It produces high-voltage power, which allows ocean
energy systems to be installed even at substantial distances from shore, as the losses during
transmission are minimal.

BioPower Systems will use the O-DriveTM module in a bioWAVETM pilot demonstration off the
coast of Victoria, Australia. The company also intends to produce a 1MW commercial version
of bioWAVETM, which would utilise four 250kW O-DriveTM modules.

"BioPower Systems has invested substantial capital and expertise to ensure that the O-DriveTM
performs optimally and reliably before deployment" said Dr Finnigan.
The company is planning to offer turnkey ocean energy solutions to project developers. Ocean
energy equipment, services and support will be provided to the companies that currently
develop wind farms.

"We intend to adopt a similar business model to those used in the wind energy sector. It is wellproven,
and serves as a good precedent for ocean energy," Dr Finnigan added.
